Isn't this the wall? I remember how it startled me. And the little slips of paper like at the wailing wall. Different kinds of prayers? The row after row after row at the graveyard in Kentucky- anonymous men of the civil war. Brother against brother. The men and women now who've come home in coffins that no one was allowed to photograph. Maybe the moment is simple and the history anything but? I don't know. Don't mean to spam, but your simple post has jarred something loose, dear remiman.
Everyone who thinks Memorial Day "kicks off the summer" needs to see this post. Thanks for stopping in at mine. Sending best wishes and much admiration your way, Frances
When I visited the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in DC I was shocked at how it managed to carve out a slice of quiet in the midst of the bustle. Simple lines, straightforward list of names, a largely unadorned space, all add up to a simple (in the best sense) honor.
Having had so many relatives involved in the wars over the past hundred years or so- dad, brother, uncles, great grandad... the simplest tribute is to never forget... thanks, Rel...
Their sacrifices will always be remembered through the writing of people like you, Rel.
Thank you, Rel, for your warm and kind words to me recently. I think we recognise in each other a genuine and like-minded person. It's good to have a friend like you :)
I am so glad that I just popped into your blog and saw this. I was disheartened after watching morning TV while working out this morning and seeing nothing but talk of Memorial Day as kick off to swimsuit season. Thanks for showing me the true focus.

Thank you for the reminder of this weekend. It gets lost.
Indeed simple---beautiful, eloquent simplicity---and yet complex. A poignant and exceedingly appropriate reminder. Thanks, Rel.
Ahhh, yes. Perfect! Just simple, and saying so much.
I add my thanks.

Thank you to all service men and women over the years. Without you, we would not have our current freedoms.
