She comes unbidden
Enveloping me without mercy
I can not resist.
To the machine of exercise
I go
In my attempt to escape.
Surcease but for the moment.
There, swirling, she snares me and
Powerless to resist
I relent
Letting her have her way
with me.
Too soon she leaves.
Refreshed and alive
I call her back.
To no avail!
An impostor is sent and
for a time, suffices.
But later when
Summoned
My enchantress lingers
and the wanting grows.
tortured mind and finally she
returns,
Knowing I will reject her now.

It had been a wonderful week and Aurelie felt sad that she had been surly that last day she and Danijel had spent together in Paris. When she said goodbye to him at the Gare de l’est, she could see the sadness in his eyes. She had apologized but, still, her behavior had tarnished an otherwise romantic interlude.
She’d make it up to him she said; “next week when I come to visit you in your hometown, Bratislava.” She was looking forward to meeting Danijel’s parents. Although, she had to admit she was more than a little nervous. It was important to make a good first impression before she and Danijel told his parents about their wedding plans.
The original plan was for both of them to travel together by train from Paris to Munich on the night train. The next day they would take the train from Munich to Vienna, spend a few hours there and later in the afternoon take the hydrofoil across the Danube to Bratislava. But she couldn’t get away from her job and he had to get back to his job at the Hotel, where he was the head desk clerk.
Danijel wasn’t at the station when she arrived and she was puzzled, wondering if he was having second thoughts after her behavior last week. “I’m sure there’s a perfectly good explanation” she thought, as she got into the taxi. She gave the driver the address Danijel had written down for her on the back of a box of matches. Even though he didn’t smoke, Danijel always had a few of his hotel’s match boxes in his suit coat pocket. He used them like most people used business cards.
After repeatedly knocking on the door to Danijel’s apartment and getting no response, Aurelie went to find the super. After explaining her situation, he agreed to accompany her while letting her into Danijel’s apartment. The stuffiness was oppressive and the room was very cold, as cold as the outside temperature of forty degrees Fahrenheit. They saw Danijel lying on the sofa as still as a stone. The space heater by the sofa was cold also. His complexion was cherry red. On the coffee table beside the space heater and directly in front of the sofa was a box of matches half open, one partially burned match lying atop.

Last night while talking on the phone with my wife she asked if I was going to write a new blog post for today. I said that I hadn't thought of anything yet to write about so , "not sure."
Now it's approaching the time for me to leave for the surgery center and I just a few moments ago thought of something to post about.
Earlier when I first got up and looked at my calender, you know, the one with 10 things to be happy about listed everyday, I noticed first of all the date: 17 Feb. My dad was born on this date in 1920. He'd be 90 today if he hadn't left us in 1978. Happy birthday dad; I still listening!
The second thing I noticed was the list and number two on the list was ; WASHING THE DISHES BY HAND. I thought, "yup, I like to do that." Then I moved on to checking my e-mail, facebook and blogger. Let me say here a big thank you to Willow for starting up the Magpie Tales blog. It prompted me back to the writing table and, not that it matters, I had more commenters on my post than I've had in a year or more.
Now that I'm late leaving for work let me say, after hand washing my breakfast dishes: Washing dishes by hand is a calming meditative task that brings me pleasure!
No, no I said: do your own dishes! ;)

"That seems like quite an old piece Margaret, where ever did you come by it?"
"Are you referring to that ol' pewter pitcher there on the mantel? Well of course you are. It came with the house Ester."
" Really? It came with the house?"
"Yes it did, it came with the house. I found it in that side cabinet, there, aside of the fireplace. I thought for sure the previous owner had forgotten it so I called the realtor to tell her what I'd found and to say that I was sure the previous owner would want it. But the realtor was aware that the pitcher had been left behind. She said that the previous owner, Mrs. Lloyd Penderghast had left it purposely, saying that it was as much a part of the house as the boards and nails."
"My goodness Margaret, whatever do you suppose she meant by that, as much a part of the house as the nails and boards?"
"Well. as you can imagine Ester, I did inquire as to whether or not the realtor knew what was meant by that. She went on to say that she wasn't exactly clear on the details, but that some time back, when the house was built or there abouts, some famous personage has been invited to stay here in this house and gave the owners a gift of the pewter creamer and sugar bowl in gratitude for their hospitality."
"Oh Margaret, aren't you just itching to know who that famous person was who stayed in YOUR house all those many years ago? Why, maybe you'll find more treasures if you search hard enough."
"Of course my curiosity was peaked Ester, so I went to the local historical society to see what I could find out about the history of this house."
"And what did you learn Margaret?"
"In 1777 this house was owned by a group know as the Moravian Brethren, and following a revolutionary war battle; the battle of Brandywine, they cared for a wounded officer, a Major-General, in Washington's Army. The man was the Marquis de Lafayette. Now whether or not he is the person who gave the pewter set, I like to believe he did. I also like the idea that I may be sleeping every night in the same bed once occupied by that gallant and dashing Frenchman."

My brother called me on the phone last week. Now there's a novel idea; communicating with someone via phone, voice to voice instead of facebooking or chatting online, texting or tweeting. In the course of our hour long conversation he mentioned that he missed my blog or more specifically he missed my writing on my blog. Admittedly, my contributions here, for awhile, have been nothing more than a poor imitation of blogging. It has been more like a facebook entry on a blog page. Aw yes facebook; what a colossal waste of time! It has a place, and that place can be an avenue to renew acquaintances from long-a-go and /or far away. For myself it has taken up far too much time....FAR TOO MUCH TIME. Time that could be spent more profitably, blogging for instance. I've a million excuses of course, like one of the things-to-be-happy-about entries on today's calender: "a perfectly good explanation." But really, what is there for me to blog about? My new job that I've been at for one month, my new granddaughter who changes profoundly on a weekly basis, responding to writing prompts on old reliable writing blogs, What! what should I write about?
Perhaps I should write about a pitcher, a pewter ewer resurrected from it's cardboard casket and placed on a blog friends mantel to serve as a prompt, an inspiration to write about. Maybe tomorrow. For now ....to work!

It seems,
In the city called
Big Apple.
The apple of our eye
was born;
Our one and only girl.
And we
And all the world
Are better for it
Too!
